The company Welcomp had its origins in Welkom, in the Free State, in 1982. It was established by Alan Lintott and Louis du Preez (both ex Infogold employees) as a bureau service to the businesses in Welkom.
They ran the Debtors and Payroll’s for a number of companies until the IBM PC became available in South Africa.
It was not long after this that they setup a retail store and started serving the broader public with various PC offerings from IBM and with the advent of compatible computers the offering expanded.
In 1988 they opened up Branches in Bloemfontein and Kimberley and in 1990 a branch in Potchefstroom (today known as R&R Computers).
In 1995 they sold the Welkom business to Computer Super Store (part of Pinnacle Holdings at the time), however they retained the name ,Welcomp.
Louis Du Preez moved to George and opened a Welcomp (George) and Alan Lintott moved to Johannesburg and opened Welcomp (W.Rand) in Northcliff.
During this time Welcomp (Mpumalanga) was established in Nelspruit.
Today all the shops are independently owned and run by their respective owners.
As of 1 April 2011 Welcomp (W.Rand) has been owned and run by Peter Ladner, who worked for Alan and Louis as a salesman in Welkom from 1985 to 1989 and as their sourcing agent from 1992 to 1995. |
